Overview

Recruiting new Scouts and adult leaders is a shared responsibility of the Cubmaster, Committee Chair, and Membership Chair. The Cubmaster is specifically responsible for leading the program at recruitment events and communicating the Cub Scout experience to prospective families.

Scout Recruitment

Annual Recruitment Season (September)

The primary recruitment season is early fall — September “school-night” events timed to coincide with school start.

Cubmaster role at recruitment events:

  • Present the Cub Scout program to prospective families (what Cub Scouting is, what Pack 232 does)
  • Answer questions about the program, time commitment, and cost
  • Make the experience feel welcoming and exciting
  • Sign up interested Scouts on the spot (Membership Chair handles paperwork)

Before the event:

  • Coordinate with Membership Chair on event logistics and location
  • Coordinate with Public Relations Coordinator to ensure fliers, social media posts, and school communications are prepared
  • Recruit current den leaders and Scout families to attend as ambassadors

Year-Round Recruitment

Recruitment is a year-round activity. The Cubmaster:

  • Encourages current Scout families to invite neighbors and friends
  • Participates in community visibility events (activities fairs, parades) when possible
  • Works with Membership Chair to follow up on prospects and Scouts who have dropped out
  • Coordinates with the AOL den leader to encourage crossover Scouts to recruit for the pack

Adult Leader Recruitment

The Cubmaster works with the Committee Chair to ensure every den has a den leader and assistant den leader, and that the overall pack has sufficient adult support.

When recruiting adult leaders:

  1. Use the Selecting Cub Scout Leadership Guide to identify candidates
  2. Approach prospective leaders personally — a direct ask is more effective than a general announcement
  3. Explain the specific role and time commitment clearly
  4. Connect them immediately with training resources (my.Scouting.org)
  5. Committee Chair submits adult applications

Positions to always monitor for vacancies:

  • All den leader / assistant den leader slots
  • Assistant Cubmaster
  • Committee chair positions that are vacant or at risk
