Pack 232 Pinewood Derby Rules At the heart of this event’s success is the process itself - bonds are strengthened as the Cub Scout partners with a parent or adult mentor to design, carve, paint, weigh, refine, and race the car. In addition, Cub Scouts build confidence and take pride in their own growing skills and hard work. So enjoy the ride! 1 Pack 232 follows the standard “Rules in the Box” which are as follows:
- Car Specifications: Width: - 2-3/4”; Length - 7”; Weight - Not over 5 Ounces; Width between wheels - 1-3/4”; Bottom clearance between car and track - 3/8”
- Wheel bearings, washers, and bushings are prohibited.
- The car shall not ride on springs.
- Only official Cub Scout Grand Prix Pinewood Derby wheels and axles are permitted.
- Only dry lubricant is permitted.
- Details, such as steering wheel and driver are permissible as long as these details do not exceed the maximum length, width and weight specifications.
- The car must be free-wheeling, with no starting devices.
- Each car must pass inspection by the official inspection committee before it may compete.
- If, at registration., a car does not pass inspection, the owner will be informed of the reason for failure, and will be given time within the official weigh-in time period to make the adjustment. 10.After final approval, cars will not be re-inspected unless the car is damaged in handling or in a race. Additionally we will be observing the following rules:
- The car must have been made during the current Pack year (the year in which the derby is held). 12.The entire car must stage behind the starting pin. 13.The wheel-base must be at least 4 inches and must ensure that no portion of the wheels extend beyond the ends of the car body. Axle holes may be drilled into the body of the car as long as all other specifications are met. 14.The car body may have no moving parts. Either on exterior or as weights. 15.The official number must be clearly marked or visible on the car. The number assigned is on the box your derby car kit was given to you in. 16.Once a car is impounded after inspection it may only be handled by the “Pit Crew” volunteers. If a car is damaged during a race or in handling after impound, it may be handled by the scout & adult partner for repair, but must be re-inspected to race again. 1 www.pinewoodderby.org
